Our musical tour of the Western Hemisphere begins in Argentina with the music of Carlos Guastavino. Known as the “Schubert of the Pampas,” Guastavino composed over 200 songs as well as chamber music and works for piano. We will be presenting selections from his Indianas Suite. You will hear rhythms and structures derived from folk dances such as the Argentina zamba and the chacarera.
The bravura piano accompaniment is frequently reminiscent of a classical guitar. Moving our tour to the north, we will encounter Canadian composer John Greer. His Liebesleid-Lieder is a set of dances for vocal quartet and piano four-hands. Setting texts by the inimitable Dorothy Parker, Greer has created a hilarious companion piece to Brahms’ Liebeslieder. Greer’s set includes everything from Charleston to a Bolero to a Gavotte. You will definitely want to join us in this ballroom! Dr. Timothy McReynolds will be joining Virginia Sircy on the piano bench for a tour around the musical dance floor. Finally, we will close out our tour back in the USA with selections from the American Songbook. You can look forward to hearing Gershwin, Porter, Ellington and more! We do hope you will join us for this delightful program!
