Americans in Paris: The French Connection

18 October 2014 | 7:30 pm | The Lyceum

This season, Words&Music is really going places. We will start our journey in the salons of Paris where we will enjoy melodies both sparkling and lush by beloved composers such as Ravel and Fauré, Duparc and Bizet. Then we will “hop the pond” to the New World to experience the French influence on composers in the Americas. A whole generation of American composers studied in France, including Ned Rorem, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, George Gerswhin and…Burt Bacharach! The French influence was not limited to the United States. From the music of Reynaldo Hahn (Venezuela) to Villa Lobos (Brazil), our musical journey will take us to the Southern Hemisphere and beyond. Come along as we explore the possibilities!
